Dear Sports Medicine Physician:

In the past, the Florida Medical Association (FMA) in conjunction with the Florida Orthopaedic Society has passed a number of resolutions concerning the quality of care of sports medicine within the state of Florida. As leaders in sports medicine and members of the AOSSM, we would like to move forward in various areas to help implement these resolutions.

A most recent resolution passed by the FMA was a resolution requesting ambulance

coverage for high school football games. In Duval County we have managed to get both the JV games and the high school games covered by private ambulance companies, however, the school system has had to just recently increase the amount that they pay per game for coverage, and this appears to be an issue. I would be happy to share with you some materials and protocols that we use in Duval County to accomplish these goals. We have talked with our city Fire/Rescue regarding this, but so far have been met with some resistance. I would be very interested in hearing from you as to whether or not your area has ambulance coverage – if so, how it is paid for? If there is no ambulance coverage or only partial coverage, what might we try to do to implement coverage in your county or geographic area?

The second area that we need input is in regard to a resolution passed by the FMA in 1992. This was a resolution implementing sports symposiums around the state. We have tried doing these and found that every two to three years seem like a reasonable length of time for these sports symposiums. Certainly, if you have found a yearly symposium in your area that is more appropriate, we would like to hear from you. If you have not put on a symposium in your area, we would be happy to help. Some sample sports symposiums that have been implemented in Duval County and around the state are available if you are interested. If you have produced symposiums in your area, we would appreciate a report stating how you do it and a copy of your agenda.

The last issue that we are currently dealing with in Duval County is trying to obtain Certified Athletic Trainers in the public school system. As you know, several school systems within the state do find Certified Athletic Trainers, however, I believe the majority do not. The National NATA certainly has been pushing hard to get Certified Athletic Trainers in the schools; however, both financial reasons and conflicts with the teachers’ union have been obstacles in this regard. Information regarding our efforts in Duval County is also available if you are interested. I would appreciate hearing from you regarding the status of athletic trainers in the school system in your area.

Thank you very much for your help in this matter. Click here

We would also appreciate any input from you regarding further activities that you think are important for the Sports Medicine Committee of the Florida Orthopaedic Society to implement, which would improve sports medicine care of our young athletes in the state of Florida. Please fax your completed survey to 813-269-7539. Please contact the FOS office in Tampa if you are interested in receiving information regarding any of the issues discussed above.

Sincerely,
