In the modern era the topic of healthy eating is permeating our society. Issues like GMO (genetically modified organism), gluten-free products, soy and organic versus non-organic products is stimulating debate about what to put in our bodies. Certainly, people are entitled to eat what they want. However, when we consider that unhealthy diets contribute to an increase in obesity, adult and childhood diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and cancer we should pay close attention to the data.
Everyone knows eating fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains are recommended for a healthy lifestyle. However, when the topic of GMO is factored, research studies demonstrate that our healthy food staples may cause more harm than good. Research data from universities, international government organizations, and private research firms, demonstrate that mice exclusively fed GMO foods develop rapid cancer cells and tumors. This is alarming considering 95% of soybeans and 80% of corn grown in the U.S., are genetically modified and banned by the USDA organic division.
Many additives found in our foods are also diminishing our options for nutritious meals. In the U.S., many chemical additives are permitted while banned in other countries. Some of these additives include; coloring agents (blue 1, blue 2, yellow 5 and yellow 6) found in products like Macaroni and Cheese, olestra/olean found in potato chips, BHA and BHT in cereal, azodicarbonamide in bread, arsenic in chicken, synthetic hormones (rBGH and rBST) in milk, potassium bromate in flour and brominated vegetable oil in soda.
Healthy diets don’t only affect the body. Research studies demonstrate that eliminating food additives (that can function as toxins and allergens) reduce depression and anxiety. Many individuals who eat (organic, non-GMO) vegetarian or vegan foods report enhanced mental clarity, better focus, and balanced emotions.
When thinking about diet and lifestyle, consider these facts. Every 28 days our entire dermal (skin) layer is replaced, every 5 months our liver is replaced, and every 10 years our bones are replaced. These organs and systems are replaced from foods we consume. Essentially, we are what we eat, and we have the option to decide what we are made of.
When considering healthy food options it is worth factoring organic products. This includes organic toothpaste, deodorant, and water without fluoride. It is recommended to eat high quantities of (organic and non-canned, non-frozen) fruits and vegetables. It is worth the time and effort to reduce or eliminate fast food meals and learn how to cook fresh foods (with bottled or non-fluoridated water). Many delicious recipes exist on the internet and in cook books to make cooking fresh foods fun and rewarding.
Finally, it is recommended to consume as much water as possible. Studies have demonstrated that drinking water after waking-up activates internal organs. Drinking a glass of water 30 minutes before eating a meal can aide in digestion, and drinking 1 glass of water before going to sleep avoids stroke or heart attack. Water has also been proven to assist in weight regulation and weight-loss.
