YPS Section AMA Delegate Report
Adam Bright, M.D.

When I first started my practice, I did not know whether I should continue to be a member of the American Medical Association or not. After talking with my peers, I initially chose not to because I thought that the AMA was run by medical doctors and not surgeons, and that by joining the AAOS and the FOS, my interests and time would be better spent. However, I have learned over the years that the AMA has a very strong voice in Washington. It is becoming more “pro-active” instead of “reactive.” I then accepted a position as a member of

the Florida YPS Delegate Team, and am pleased to announce the results of second successful AMA YPS Meeting.

It was just as hot and sunny in Chicago as it was in Florida. At the Clayton Memorial Luncheon, YPS Delegates were very vocal in expressing their opinions on what the AMA should be doing. Chief proposals included better communications with members about what the AMA is currently doing, mobilizing our members when action is required, and doing a much better job with publicity (what physicians do, how they are hamstrung by major insurers, how to live healthy, enhance the AMA’s Physician Finder, and others). Following a successful Surgical Caucus by the main AMA House of Delegates, the YPS Surgical Caucus met for the first time this year and united our voices in the YPS House of Delegates.

In the YPS House of Delegates, the YPS House did recommend to study the health impact of commercial advertising in schools, the appropriate use of restraints determined by that patient’s physician, and recommend that direct to consumer advertising include the words “your physician may recommend other treatment options more appropriate for your care.” [The words “more appropriate” were offered by your YPS Delegate Adam Bright in Reference Committee.]

Regarding issues in YPS House Reference Committee B, the YPS House recommended that the AMA advocate that CPT Modifiers be accepted by National Payors, the AMA pursue reduced malpractice premiums for part-time practicing physicians, and that the AMA develop model state legislation that defines “clean claims” and prevents insurance plans from unjustly denying claims, delaying and/or reducing payments, and spontaneously changing their contracts with physicians. [This Resolution was supported based on the Connecticut State Medical Society’s favorable experience with a bold class action suit against 6 major insurers. Per the Connecticut YPS Delegate, other states are encouraged to join their class action suit. I was a co-sponsor of this resolve, as were the other YPS Delegates from our state.]

If you have any questions regarding these issues or others that concern the American Medical Association, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,
Adam S. Bright, M.D.
